It’s a chance to learn about the charity, hear from some social anxiety researchers and perhaps meet others on a similar social anxiety journey.

The event is being hosted via The London Shyness Social Group who are kindly allowing us to publicise our event to their members.

The first 10 minutes will be a brief presentation about the charity – including where we are right now, our aims and ambitions. It is also an opportunity for you to feedback how the charity might best serve the needs of those with social anxiety and a chance for you to become involved.

The first short research presentation is by Shannan – a Trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Manchester who is seeking feedback – especially from those that have attended NHS Talking Therapy for social anxiety, about her research on an intervention that could be delivered as part of CBT treatment.

The second is by Emily who is doing an MSc Psychology Dissertation research study with BPP University. This will include the chance to take part in a social anxiety survey – and a very brief interview – both opportunities would be arranged in the weeks following the awareness event itself.

About the Charity
The charity was formed in Aug2021 and we believe it is the UK’s first dedicated social anxiety charity. The charity’s aim is to provide information and resources for individuals suffering from social anxiety and social phobia, alongside raising public awareness on this common yet often under-publicised mental health problem.

The Social Anxiety Alliance seeks to promote a better understanding of social anxiety, where appropriate treatment options are open and accessible, where support and information is easily available and where nobody feels ashamed to say they have social anxiety or to ask for help.

We intend to do this (among other things) by:
(1) collaborating with other UK mental health charities to develop an easily accessible range of social anxiety information and resources
(2) providing links to self-help options
(3) providing information on accessing NHS and private therapy
(4) provide summaries/links to the best social anxiety articles, research and other relevant content available online

Further services – such as telephone information/support lines will hopefully develop when we can find the appropriate funding.

The website itself can be found by searching for “Social Anxiety Alliance UK”.

What’s in it for me?
It’s a chance to learn a little more about the charity, about social anxiety itself and about some current research projects. It’s also a chance to meet other people with social anxiety – and if you were interested – a chance to give us feedback about how we can help you and how we can improve the website.

What if I am nervous?
We understand you may be nervous, we have social anxiety too. There will be no need to speak – or even have your video on – just join us and see what we are trying to do.

Will there be questions and answers?
We know some people will be very nervous to speak but yes – there will be a chance to ask questions after each the small presentation. You can also type questions in the “chat” feature within Zoom. You can also just email us with questions after the event.
