The term “panic attack” is often used with those who have panic disorder where panic may come out of the blue without any obvious trigger. People with panic disorder feel worried and fearful about having another panic attack and often avoid places due to the fear of having another panic attack. Whilst “attacks” or “occurrences” of social anxiety can feel extremely uncomfortable and distressing – cognitively, emotionally, and physically – the term “panic attack” would normally be reserved for the more extreme scenarios.

It can be possible to have social anxiety and experience panic attacks in the most extreme situations. This does not mean you have panic disorder. It can also be possible to have social anxiety and panic disorder.
